This coloring page shows a young pterodactyl with a playful expression, balanced at the very top of a rocky peak, wings spread wide and unevenly, one raised higher than the other as if it had just landed. Its head carries a long, curved crest, its eye is big and round, and its smile is clearly visible. Its feet rest on the stone beside a small tuft of grass growing between the rocks. Around the base of the peak, rounded boulders and ferns are clustered together, two palm trees frame the scene on either side, and in the distance on the right, a volcano releases a puffy cloud of smoke. The sky above is left completely blank. The rock, marked with long vertical grooves, gives wide, easy sections to fill without going over the lines — a good printable coloring page for a beginner. The dino's broad wings color in quickly too. The ferns and palm fronds at the bottom take a bit more patience because of their thin, jagged edges. The linework stays even, neither too fine nor too crowded, which suits children from about 5-6 years old; expect roughly twenty minutes to finish the whole background. Since the rocky peak sits at the center of the page and draws the eye first, color it first using two or three shades of the same tone to bring out the grooves, then move on to the boulders and plants.
