π ABOUT PTERANODON
Meet Pteranodon, the 'Toothless Wing'! This amazing flying reptile soared through the skies, catching fish with its long beak. Imagine a giant bird with a cool head crest!
Pteranodon, meaning 'Toothless Wing,' was one of the largest flying reptiles, or pterosaurs, ever! It lived during the Late Cretaceous period, about 86 to 84 million years ago, in what is now the United States. Imagine a giant seagull with a wingspan that could reach over 6 meters! Unlike dinosaurs, Pteranodon was a reptile, but it shared the prehistoric world with them.
What made Pteranodon special was its huge wings and distinctive head crest. Scientists believe the crest might have helped with steering, balance, or even attracting a mate! Pteranodon was a piscivore, meaning it loved to eat fish. It probably swooped down over the ocean surface, using its long, toothless beak to scoop up its meals. These amazing creatures were built for flight, with hollow bones to keep them light and strong wings that could carry them through the air at speeds of up to 48 kilometers per hour. Pteranodon fossils help us understand how these ancient reptiles lived and flew!
