HATCHING DINOSAUR EGG #4

A baby dinosaur pokes its head and two front feet out of a cracked egg, the broken top of the shell sitting over its head like a little hood. It grins with wide round eyes, gripping the jagged rim of the shell, while the egg itself rests on a bumpy mound of cracked ground. Ferns fan out on either side, two palm trees rise behind on the left, and in the distance a volcano puffs out a large cloud of smoke. Small round pebbles, some speckled just like the egg, lie scattered at the base of the mound. The dino and its shell are drawn with bold, even lines that leave large open spaces, easy enough for young children to fill in. The finer work sits in the egg's speckles, the mottled pebbles, the feathery fronds of the ferns and palms, and the puffy smoke above the volcano — details better suited to kids around 6 or 7 who have a bit more patience. Finishing the whole scene takes about thirty minutes. Since the shell over the head and the egg below are really the same broken shell, coloring them in matching tones makes that connection read clearly on the page.
