The pteranodon fills the center of the page, wings spread wide, one raised toward the sky and the other lowered toward the palms, as if banking mid-turn. Its long slender beak curves into a smile, its round eye looks straight out, and its small clawed feet dangle beneath it. Behind it, two palm trees frame the scene, a volcano puffs a cloud of smoke between their trunks, and on the ground three clusters of faceted rocks sit among ferns with tightly coiled, spiral fronds. The wide wing and belly shapes fill in quickly with markers or crayons, which makes this coloring page approachable for younger children. The smaller areas - the rock facets, the palm leaf veins, the fern spirals and the little smoke cloud - take more patience and suit kids already comfortable with coloring. Expect about twenty minutes for the wings and body alone, longer if every rock and frond gets its own care. Since the two wings are drawn at different angles, giving them two close but distinct shades helps the flying motion read clearly on the page.
