The picture shows a round-faced, smiling ankylosaurus standing on four short, spotted legs. Its long tail curls forward over its back and ends in a bony club, ringed by curved motion lines that suggest it's swinging. Rows of rounded plates run along the back, and two small horns sit on top of the head. Two palm trees frame the scene, spiral ferns curl on either side, scattered pebbles and tufts of grass cover the ground, and a smoking volcano with a trickle of lava rises in the background under two round clouds. The outline is thick and rounded, built for younger colorists: the body, palm trees and volcano offer large, easy-to-fill areas. The many back plates and the curling ferns need steadier hands and more patience, whether with crayon or fine marker. The open spaces take about half an hour, closer to an hour if every plate gets its own shade. To keep the dinosaur readable, pick one colour for the back plates and a different one for the tail club rather than mixing several tones.
